Breakaway is played on a 27' by 54' field composed of three teams per alliance. Each match is 2 minutes and 15 seconds. Each alliance is given 6 balls to place in front of their robots. Three in the far zone, two in the middle, and one in the zone closest to their goal. The first 15 seconds of the match is known as the autonomous period. During this time robots run on a set of preprogrammed instructions and try to shoot the balls into the goal for one point. After the 15 seconds the tele-operated period starts. During the remaining amount of time, teams take control of their robots and attempt to shoot balls into the goals while going over or under the bumps that separate the zones. Each team must return the balls within a set amount of time in order to avoid penalties. When 20 seconds remain on the clock, robots are allowed to climb on to a tower atop each of the bumps in order to score bonus points. Each robot on the platform or hanging off the floor receives two extra points, while robots hanging off other robots receive three extra points.

Breakaway has many rules that can give a team a yellow card which serves as a warning and is carried with you throughout all the matches. If a team receives a second yellow card, they are disqualified from the match and receive no points. A team may be immediately disqualified if they receive a red card.
